International audiences are getting to know the wild and mystic wonder that is Tora Brava. As an artist who performs around the world, Tora is a triple-threat singer/dancer/actress with vocal chops that have earned her comparisons to Pat Benatar, Amy Lee and Siouxsie Sioux. A big voice in a petite and complete package, the artist also has the brains and talent of a songwriter who has explored the gamut of musical genres from an early age. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Tora kept her parents and the neighbors up all hours with her singing. “Pop songs, nursery rhymes, Broadway, it didn’t matter. I was like this little songy machine they couldn’t shut up.” It was the same when the family moved to Panama, then New York and subsequently settled down in New Jersey. She took up classical piano, viola and voice and went on to train in Korean traditional opera and drumming. These influences can be found on her first album with her band Xtatika, released on John Zorn’s label Tzadik to encouraging reviews. Her artistic credits in performance art and music include her holding her own onstage with the likes of Karen Finley, Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon. In addition to the U.S., Tora Brava has performed in Europe, Mexico, and, recently, Asia. Her work channels her own personal point of view on love, tragedy and mysticism with a taut blend of precision, drama and passion. Always exuding her own sense of style, Tora Brava is an award-winning writer who crafts her unique sound as a pop/rock artist with personality and haunting emotion. Onstage she is fearless and able to turn audiences into rabid fans with just one song. Her band is tight onstage and in the studio, intent on breathing new life into their beloved genre of rock. Currently Tora and her band are in the studio working on a top-secret project which will soon be announced.
